While the tech sector may not be immune to downsizing, generally speaking it experiences strong and steady growth. In fact, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects in computer and technology occupations between 2022 and 2032, with approximately 377,500 openings each year.

One of the many fields experiencing this growth 鈥 especially due to the rapid expansion of machine learning and artificial intelligence 鈥 is data science. Data scientists play an extremely important role in harnessing the power of large amounts of information to help make companies profitable. But what is data science, and what career options exist for those who pursue degrees in it?

Let鈥檚 explore how bachelor鈥檚 and master鈥檚 programs in data science can lead to rewarding job opportunities.听

BLS Occupational Employment Projections, 2022-2032 is published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. This data reflects BLS鈥 projections of national (not local) conditions. These data points are not specific to SM调教所 students or graduates.

What is data science?听

Data science is a broad field in the technology industry that focuses on the design and creation of听data modeling techniques听and processes to help organizations collect and organize data to inform business decisions. The field has several specialties, including data mining, data engineering and machine learning.听

While jobs in the data science field are available in a number of industries, they typically require the knowledge and experience provided by a relevant听technology degree, such as one in data science or computer science.

We spoke with Joseph Aranyosi,an associate dean in the College of Business and Information Technology at SM调教所, to discuss what鈥檚 typically needed to thrive in data science. 鈥淸Third-party] certification and proficiency in a variety of programming languages (e.g., Python, R, SQL), data visualization tools (e.g., PowerBI, Tableau), and statistical and analytical problem-solving techniques is a big plus,鈥 Aranyosi says.*

*While some programs at UOPX may help prepare students for various third-party certifications, at this time UOPX does not equip individuals with certifications through their programs.

Why is data science important?听

. Practically every smart device can automatically collect and store information. Online systems, payment portals, and mobile and desktop applications capture data for many purposes. Companies collect text, audio, video and image data in such vast quantities that they need professionals to help comb through it and make it usable. That鈥檚 why data science matters.

Aranyosi elaborates: 鈥淒ata on its own is not very useful. It needs to be cleaned, integrated, transformed and validated before it can be effectively used. Data exploration and modeling processes allow us to evaluate data to monitor performance and look for meaningful patterns. As the Internet of Things (IoT) expands and the volume of data continues to increase, data scientists will be needed to help us answer difficult questions about data usability, privacy and security, and meaningfulness, as well as questions about the ethical design and application of algorithms that make decisions and drive activities for us.鈥
